Product Description

A c1955 African tribal mask from Ivory Coast.

It is Guere/Wobe Bugle face mask. The mask is carved out of a single piece of wood that has been stained dark brown and then decorated with white paint. The eyes are bulbous, but with the horizontal slit for the wearer to see. The mouth is open, showing the top row of teeth and the tongue. They have been painted white. The mask has been surrounded with a fringe of raffia grass and the moustache and cheeks have long black hair, very similar to human hair. Condition is good, but the raffia is a bit brittle. The mask displays the wear and patina of age. Other than a light brush, the mask has not been cleaned or polished.

The We population is estimated at 100,000, live in the southwest of the forested Côte d’Ivoire and the southeast of Liberia. They are divided into two separate ethnic groups – the Guere (also known as Ngere) and the Wobe – although they share numerous customs and beliefs. As symbols of societal beliefs and values, their masks reinforce respect for the rules and functioning of society. This mask represents a forest spirit. Formerly, Bugle masks carried out important social control functions, including judicial decisions, law enforcement, criminal punishment, fine collection, and dispute settlement. Their aggressive, lively performance was intended to instruct in proper behaviour, although in recent decades this punitive power has declined.

It is part of a collection collected by a French Diplomat based in Africa and purchased from his retirement home in Brittany, France.
