Product Description

An unusual pair of Victorian cast iron wall plaques, depicting the two great political rivals, Benjamin Disraeli and William Ewart Gladstone.

William Ewart Gladstone was a British Liberal politician who, in a career comprising sixty years, served as Prime Minister on four separate occasions. Benjamin Disraeli was a conservative politician, who served twice as Prime Minister. Together, their rivalry sparked some of the most heated and colourful debate the Commons had ever seen. The differences between the two are perhaps best illustrated by the Corn Laws, where Disraeli sought to shield British agriculture from cheap imports and therefore preserve the political character of the country, and Gladstone sought to make food more affordable, to encourage people from the land to the cities.

The plaques show the side profiles of the two politicians, with Disraeli facing to the right and Gladstone to the left. The condition of the pair is good, though there are small areas of surface rust in the crevices.
