Product Description

A very nice looking gentleman’s walking cane with a Sterling silver pommel and an ebony wood shaft, finishing in a horn tip.

The cane is made more interesting by the dedication on the silver top. It reads: ‘PRESENTED TO MR J. PREECE – BY THE CLERICAL & STORES STAFF – LOCO DEPT. – STOURBRIDGE – JANUARY 1923’. The neck of the pommel is decorated with engraved arabesque decoration. It is hallmarked Sterling silver (925), with the date stamp of 1922 and the maker’s mark of Kendall & Sons Ltd, walking stick and umbrella makers, of Charles Street, Leicester, but also Bull Street, Birmingham and Holborn Bars, London EC1. Condition is very good. There is a hole running through the horn tip, which may have been done to hold a quieter rubber cap, at some point.

The GWR engine shed at Stourbridge was located west of the OWWR line to Wolverhampton and has since been developed for housing. There would have dozens of locomotives based there at any time. A photograph taken in 1966, just weeks before its closure, showed 36 locomotives present (24 steam and 12 diesel).
