Product Description

A rare and desirable traditional Basque walking stick known as a Makila (Makhila), a century-old badge of honour in villages across the Basque Country, a must have accessory of the master of a Basque house, a walking help in a region with rugged mountain terrain and most importantly, a concealed weapon. It dates from 1931.

The top portion of the cane is covered in a handsome woven leather, with a flattened spherical horn pommel. It unscrews to reveal a pig-sticker spike, turning the stick into a spear. The shaft is made of scarified medlar wood, which has been submitted to a lengthy preparation process that gives the wood its distinctive surface finish. The bottom of the stick ends in a cross shaped spike, to aid grip on rocky surfaces. Around it is a wide brass sleeve that has engraved decoration and is stamped ESKUAL HERRIA and dated 1931. Eskual Herria is actually a misspelling of Euskal Herria or Greater Basqueland. Given the lack of education in the most rural areas of Spain, before the Civil War, it isn’t that surprising that the error went unnoticed.

The condition is very good, apart for the brass sleeve at the bottom that has split but is stable. A really nice piece of Basque history, seldom seen outside museums.
