Product Description

A late 18th/early 19th Century Bosun's Starter, Life Preserver, otherwise known as a cosh or persuader.

These were carried by Petty Officer’s aboard ship and used to hit any of the slacking/lazy crew members on the back to get them to work at a satisfactory pace, hence the name "Starter". They were also carried on land by the Press gangs, who were tasked with finding new crew members for His Majesty's Navy. This example has an extra hidden sting, in that it conceals a stiletto dagger. The Life Preserver consists of a malacca shaft mounted on either end with a lead weight covered with needle hitched twine, varnish. The tip has a brass hatch concealing the blade and a vigorous swing pushes it out, locking the blade. Condition is very good for its age.

Size: 38 cm (15 inches)
Size with blade: 51 cm (20 inches)
Weight: 320 g
