Product Description

A quirky American painted walking stick in the caricature semblance of US President Richard Nixon, that belonged to the famous actor Edward Woodward.

The stick is naively carved as the president and then painted wearing a dark blue suit. His face has the characteristic jowls but his long nose has suffered a bit of damage. The cane is signed Larry Hamm and dated 1994 and marked RICHARD NIXON. It was bought at an auction of property that had belonged to Edward Woodward and Michele Dotrice, together with a number of personal items that will also be listed on the site.

Edward Albert Arthur Woodward, OBE (1930 – 2009) was an English actor and singer. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Woodward began his career on stage. Throughout his career, he appeared in productions in both the West End of London and on Broadway in New York City. He came to wider attention from 1967 in the title role of the British television spy drama Callan, earning him the 1970 British Academy Television Award for Best Actor. Woodward starred as Police Sergeant Neil Howie in the 1973 cult British horror film The Wicker Man, and in the title role of the 1980 Australian biopic Breaker Morant. From 1985 to 1989, Woodward starred as British ex-secret agent and vigilante Robert McCall in the American television series The Equalizer, earning him the 1986 Golden Globe Award for Best Television Drama Actor. He was married to the actress Michele Dotrice.

Larry Hamm (1937 - 1996) was a sculptor who specialised in farm scenes, barns, log cabins and Noah’s Arks, with carved animals. He also did figural work, consisting of carved portraits of the U.S. Presidents and famous stars. He did, over the years, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan, Elvis Presley. His work shows up infrequently at auctions but is displayed in the permanent collection of the Kentucky Folk Art Center, Morehead, Kentucky.
Richard Milhous Nixon (1913 - 1994) was an American politician and the 37th president of the United States from 1969 until 1974. He became the only president to resign from the office due to his involvement in the Watergate scandal.
