Product Description

A beautifully made American mahogany federalist Pembroke table, made in Baltimore between 1790 and 1820.

After the American Revolution and the subsequent swelling of patriotism, the inhabitants of the young republic sought ways of separating their newfound identity from its colonial origins. Such feelings would spur a demand for furniture, that although was to all extent and purposes British in form, was adorned with distinctly American symbolism.

Flanking the drawer and faux drawer are two escutcheons inlaid with eagles, carrying star-spangled banners. A band of white pine and ebony squares are inlaid beneath the drawer. Poplar stringing runs down the edges of each leg, between which the Hepplewhite bellflowers branch down. The brass handle is of neo-classical form and has been adorned with Greek-key fret and a star.

According to The Furniture of John Shearer: 1790-1820 “The eagle inlays are most common in Baltimore. There are eagle inlays found in Pennsylvanian furniture, but not many found on Philadelphian furniture.’ A very similar example sold in a 2011 Christie’s sale in New York for 22,500USD .

The condition of the table is largely very good, with the wood taking on an attractive aged patina. A tiny section of veneer has lifted on the edge of one of the legs.
