Product Description

A finely carved sandalwood picture frame, made in south-India towards the end of the 19th century.

Predominantly carved with scrolling vines and foliage, the frame features 4 roundels depicting various Hindu deities. Ganesha, the elephant-headed god can be seen at the bottom, whilst at the top the Trimurti can be seen: the three-faced god symbolising the amalgamation of Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer.
The finial depicts the two-headed mythological bird “Gandaberunda”, the symbol of the Kingdom of Mysore.

The condition of the frame is very good, though there are a few small chips to the background vines. The sandalwood appears to be untreated and therefore retains its natural scent.
