Product Description

An attractive and large late Georgian writing box, veneered in walnut wood and with brass edging.

The box has a secret compartment on the inside. The interior of the box has the usual layout, with quill and pencil compartment, inkwells, and leather-bound slope. The inkwells are unusual in that they have the British Royal Crown emblem on the lids. The top half of the slope opens via a pair of brass catches. Beneath the bottom half, a secret drawer can be opened by lifting the section of wood separating the quill compartment and left-hand ink well. This reveals three concealed drawers. The brass nameplate is unmarked. The condition of the box is good, though the leather and brass banding has worn in parts. The walnut veneer has a nice age-toned flame and overall, the box is in very nice condition.

The box contains some balance sheets of workers salaries, dated 1833, from the Kitley Estate in South Devon. The sheets are named as belonging to Edmund Pollexfen Bastard Esq. (1784 -1838). He was a British Tory politician, son of Edmund Bastard and his wife Jane Pownoll. He married Anne Jane Rodney, granddaughter of Admiral Rodney. He succeeded his father as Member of Parliament for Dartmouth from 1812 to 1816 when that seat was taken by his younger brother, John Bastard.
