Product Description

A beautiful, finely carved wooden Black Forest ornament, in the shape of a very naturalistic ambling Brown Bear with black steel pin eyes.

Condition is very good, with a few old scuff marks. The bear is walking with his head slightly to his left and the mouth open. These carved bears became very popular in Europe and America, but more so after President Roosevelt adopted the original Teddy. The bear dates to around the end of the 19th Century. "Black Forest" is a term used to describe the elaborate, realistic wood carvings that were thought to be made in the Black Forest region of Bavaria, Germany, but new research proves that the carvings were done in Switzerland, mostly by the Trauffer family. The different carvings are generally in the theme of forest animals and can be part of ornaments, tools, furniture and cuckoo clocks. The pieces are carved from a lime (linden) or walnut tree wood. Swiss wood carvers became world renowned and featured at many international exhibitions, including the Great Exhibition, London (1851), the Centennial Exhibition, Philadelphia (1876), the Chicago Worlds Fair, Chicago (1893) and the Exposition Universelle, Paris (1900).
