c1890 Swiss Black Forest Carved Table Top Bookshelf


A Swiss antique Black Forest Travelling table top bookshelf made of hand carved wood dating to the late 19th century.

The wood is finely carved and features vine leaves and bunches of grapes. The 2 end flaps fold down for easy stowage and transport. The pieces are carved from a lime (linden) or walnut tree wood. Swiss wood carvers became world renowned and featured at many international exhibitions, including the Great Exhibition, London (1851), the Centennial Exhibition, Philadelphia (1876), the Chicago Worlds Fair, Chicago (1893) and the Exposition Universelle, Paris (1900).
