The smallest of the 4 tables has a metallic label with an ancient Chinese style building and C.K. Tang Ltd – 310 ORCHARD ROAD – SINGAPORE 9. The tables are in the traditional antique style and were retailed by the famous department store C. K. Tang Ltd, of Singapore. The store is regarded as a principal shopping destination in the city, comparable to Bloomingdale's in New York City and Selfridges in London.

Mr Tang Choon Keng, more popularly known as CK Tang, came to Singapore in 1923 from Swatow, China when he was 21, carrying with him only a tin trunk and a leather case, and hiring a rickshaw puller to peddle his wares. In 1932, he started a department store, but later in the 1950s built Tang’s Plaza, a distinctive store in the style of a Chinese palace in Beijing, in Orchard St., hoping to attract the British housewives walking to the town centre. CK Tang then earned the nickname ‘Curio King’ as the department store grew and became known for its selection of quality Chinese goods. It also became the choice store for Western brands that want to enter the Singapore market.
