Product Description

An unusual carved fruitwood bust of Dr John Keate, the headmaster at Eton College from 1809-1834.

Though it isn’t clear if these carvings were commissioned by the pupils themselves, it is certain that there was an enthusiastic market for them among Etonians. Some were made of wood, others of plaster. A selection of these were even bought by Keate himself “to prevent them from falling into the boys’ hands.”

The squat figure (about 5ft tall) of Dr John Keate (1773-1852) was a perfect target for satire. He introduced harsh disciplinary measures during his time at the college, to the point that on 30th June 1832, he flogged 80 pupils in a single day. Despite this he was remembered fondly by his pupils, who held a testimonial for him when he retired.

The condition of the bust is reasonably good, though there is evidence of old woodworm. It is likely that it was once adorned the top of a walking stick.
