Product Description

An iconic and scarce signed silk screen lithograph print by the World famous Plymouth artist Beryl Cook (1926 - 2008).

The picture is titled ‘In the Snug’ and depicts a man entering a pub with a small terrier on a lead. On a stool is another small dog eyeing the new arrival. Behind them are 2 men and a woman seated at a table in a window alcove. On the wall is a life preserver ring with NOVA SCOTIA, which is in fact the name of the pub in Bristol. Beryl Cook's is nearly always a 'tongue in cheek' critique of City life, but with a lot of warmth and humour. Her characters are always portrayed on the voluptuous side. Although most her art is inspired by her hometown of Plymouth, England, she did live and paint in Bristol. Of this painting, she wrote: ‘The ‘Nova Scotia’ is one of Bristol’s waterfront pubs and the interior is full of interesting references to sailors and the sea. One of the bars is referred to as ‘The Snug’ and it is here that the locals come for a drink and bring their dogs. Although all the humans seem very jolly there does seem to be a little canine dispute over the seating arrangements, although I expect that calm will soon be restored and tails will soon start wagging.’
