Product Description

An iconic and scarce signed silk screen lithograph print by the World famous Plymouth artist Beryl Cook (1926 - 2008).

The picture is titled ‘Bus Stop’ and depicts 3 ladies in their killer glad-rags getting on a bus to go into town. The bus has the logp and colour scheme of the Bristol company. The artist was always trying to capture the incongruous and humorous aspects of life. Beryl Cook's is nearly always a 'tongue in cheek' critique of City life, but always with warmth and humour. Her characters are always portrayed on the voluptuous side. Of this composition, she wrote: ‘It’s an early summer evening in the centre of Bristol and here are the girls on a night out, dressed to kill in their little black numbers. That man on the bus seems very pleased to see them getting on board. I wonder if he will be a gentleman and give up his seat for one of them. But which one should he choose?’.

The print run was published in 2006 and limited to 650 examples, and this numbered 339. The condition of the mounted print is good. It was produced and published for the Alexander Gallery Publications Ltd, of Bristol, England. The example is mounted, numbered and signed in pencil by Beryl Cook. Comes with an Alexander Gallery certificate of authenticity.
