Product Description

An extremely rare, possibly unique, original Beryl Cook (1926-2008) picture of a 3 masted steamship, sailing the high seas, with mermaids and fish frolicking in the foreground.

The picture is not a painting, but a woolwork tapestry, which has been mounted in a light wood frame. The picture is inspired by Victorian sailors’ woolwork tapestries, made during long trips and given to families and friends. Both styles are naïve, but the main difference is the physique of the mermaids, which are typically Beryl Cook.

Beryl Cook OBE is probably Plymouth's most famous artist of the 20th Century and is best known for her tongue in cheek representations of Plymouth social life. Her distinctive style, with large portly ladies and men, is hugely popular, making this a desirable piece for any enthusiast. The picture was given by Beryl Cook to her sister Freda, in the 1980s. The family have recently decided to part with it, so, although it isn’t signed, it comes with very good provenance. The price is very reasonable, given that her similar size oil paintings sell between £15,000 to £40,000.

Beryl Cook’s pictures are instantly recognisable, and often comical, her works pictured people whom she encountered in everyday life, including people enjoying themselves in pubs, girls shopping or out on a hen night. Collectors regularly pay £10,000 to £30,000 for her original paintings.
