1885 British Pencil & White Pastel Drawing of Monaco

£180.00

A very accomplished Victorian pencil drawing on buff paper that has been highlighted in white Pastel.

The painting shows the approach to the old port of Monaco with the cathedral on top of the hill and the Princes’ Palace slightly hidden behind it. The view is from the North East side looking South. In the middle ground are the two inlets. The bottom is annotated ‘Monaco Dec” 1885’. The painting is not signed but is part of a collection of drawings and watercolours by a British artist who signs some of them with the letters HB. Others of the same subject are dated 1885-1886.

The artist was possibly one of numerous artists that did the European Tour and had begun to discover the wonders of the South of France, as well as Italy. Alternatively, the artist may have been in the British Armed Forces, as earlier dated pictures by him, show India. Hopefully, the identity of the artist will become known, as he certainly deserves the acclamation.

Condition is good, with a little bit of foxing, which is not very noticeable as the paper is light brown.
