Product Description

An Art Deco style pastel portrait of the actor Laurence Harvey (1928-1973), painted by his friend and fellow actor John Teed (1911-1996) in 1948.

The portrait depicts Harvey at the age of twenty in a suit and tie. In the bottom right corner, it is signed ‘John Teed’ and dated ‘1948.’ In 1948, Teed and Harvey both starred in the film House of Darkness. It was Harvey’s debut film and the beginning of a career that would continue for a quarter of a century.

Laurence Harvey was born in Lithuania to Jewish parents, who had fled the country when he was five. Much of his early life was spent in South Africa, where he served in the Entertainment Unit during the Second World War. He later moved to London and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He left after 3 months and began pursuing a career as an actor. In 1973, Harvey died in Hampstead Hospital at the age of 45.

Though Harvey was the subject of many photographic portraits, this is the only painting we have found that portrays him. It is also one of the earliest depictions of him, having been painted in the year that he first appeared on the big screen. A nice piece of cinematic history.

The portrait is in good condition, having been mounted and glazed in a faux-tortoise shell frame.
