Product Description

A rare c1908 original Kees van Dongen comical picture done in India Ink on Board.

Cornelis Theodorus Maria van Dongen, better known as Kees van Dongen was a Dutch painter and one of the main exponents of the 'Fauvism' movement. Born in 1877 in Rotterdam, he moved to Paris in 1897 where he exhibited with and was a contemporary of Henri Matisse and Picasso. In addition to selling his paintings, van Dongen also gained an income by selling satirical sketches to the Parisian newspaper Revue Blanche.

This picture is most likely one of this sketches and features a husband arriving home drunk and his wife exclaiming in French - "Well, here you are again drunk! It's embarrassing! Everyone is talking about how you drink for fourteen". He ripostes - "Jealous, me Dear, they are just jealous".

van Dongen's French was not perfect and there are a couple of spelling mistakes, which have been corrected, possibly by the publisher. The picture is signed by van Dongen and has has been evaluated by Christie's, who believe it to be original given the brush strokes and the board used (email confirmation). The board has SECHOIX moulded into it on the bottom left hand corner.

Original drawings by van Dongen have made as much as £40-50,000 at auction. His humorous pictures are less well known and rarer. The picture has been very lightly sketched in blue crayons before it was finished in India Ink.
