A beautiful c1932 crayon and paint portrait of a beautiful girl by the artist Mary Ireland, that was a preliminary study for a memorial panel in the Princess Elizabeth of York Children’s Hospital, London.

It shows a side view of a stunning girl/young woman, in crayon, with just a hint of red colour in her dress and her red lips. The drawing has been signed Mary Ireland. Underneath the signature is written in capitals: STUDY FOR A CHILD’S HEAD USED IN THE MEMORIAL PANEL (FABRIC MOSAIC) TO G.W. FOR “PRINCESS ELIZABETH OF YORK CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL”. The picture has been mounted framed and glazed.

Mary Ireland is known for Stained glass and fabric design. She was born in 1891, in Stockingford, Warwickshire. She was a fabric designer, stained glass artist, illuminator, and writer. She was influenced by the Birmingham School, in particular, the work of Joseph Southall. She received numerous religious commissions, including one at Bruges Cathedral, Belgium.

The Princess Elizabeth of York Hospital for Children, was opened in 1932, as an amalgamation of previous hospitals. However, the Queen's Hospital for Children amalgamated with the Princess Elizabeth of York Hospital for Children, to form the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for Children in 1942.
