Product Description

An Ernest Procter pencil drawing, finished in watercolour entitled “Billets at Coxyde”. Coxyde is the anglicised spelling of Koksijde, a town in Northern Belgium, now the setting of an important Military Cemetery.

Procter’s handwriting in pencil can be seen on the back of the painting.

Ernest Procter (1886-1935) was an established painter of the Newlyn School. Procter exhibited frequently in London, in both the International Society and Royal Academy.

During WWI he worked for the Red Cross in Northern France. During this time he captured the lives of serving men in a small series of sketches and watercolours. Some of these were bought by the Imperial War Museum, where they reside to this day.

After the war he returned to Newlyn, where he establised the Procter-Harvey School of Art in 1920. He was appointed Director of Design and Craft at the Glasgow School of Art in 1934.

An interesting and rare drawing, with historical importance.
