Product Description

A rare and unusual hand coloured engraving of Frederick II of Prussia, by the German artist Eugen Denzel.

Eugen Denzel (1901 - 1980) was a German painter, cartoonist and print maker. Denzel’s early years saw him combine his studies at the Dusseldorf Art Academy with employment as a miner in the Ruhr. Later, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Returning to Hamburg in the early 1930’s, Denzel would find work as a cartoonist in the Hamburger Echo, a predominantly left-leaning newspaper that found itself precariously-placed with the rise of Nazism. The rest of his life was devoted to painting; with much of his success found during the period of National Socialism.

Most likely made in the era of the Third Reich, when public interest in the Prussian King was at its zenith, the picture shows Frederick the Great gazing inquisitively. He wears his distinctive guardsman’s uniform and tricorn, as well as the Order of the Black Eagle on his chest.

The pencil signature of Eugen Denzel can be seen in the bottom right corner; ‘Handkoloriert’ (hand-coloured) can be seen in the opposite corner.

The engraving is in good condition having been tastefully framed.
