Product Description

Artist: John Crawford Wintour (1825-1882)
Title: “Portrait Study of a Young Lady”
Medium: Charcoal (and Chalk) on Brown Paper
Date: c1842

This exceptional portrait study of a young lady, drawn in the early years of Wintour’s career, is quite different from the loose and vivid landscapes that he would later become famous for painting.

The Scottish Art Review of 1888, recalls, how, "At an early age Wintour exhibited a talent for drawing, and, entering the Trustees' Academy, he made rapid progress and became a favourite with his master, Sir William Allan. From the time he was seventeen he maintained himself by miniature and portrait painting, and by making anatomical diagrams for the university professors."

John Crawford Wintour (1825-1882) was a Scottish landscape painter, whose known output is almost entirely comprised of moorland and forest scenes.
