Product Description

A rare pencil drawing, by the Italian painter Michelangelo Pacetti, dated 1824.

The drawing portrays a typical roadside scene, possibly on the outskirts of Rome, where a horse laden with hay is being driven by its peasant master. A large stone trough can be seen in the foreground, whilst the peak of a large hill can be seen behind the buildings. In the bottom-right corner, the drawing is signed “M. Pacetti 1824” in black ink.

Michelangelo Pacetti (1773-1865) was an Italian painter, best known for his topographical scenes of Rome and Naples. He was the son of the sculptor Vincenzo Pacetti, who restored a selection of significant classical sculptures during the late 18th century. Both were avid collectors. A diary kept by the father has proved an invaluable guide to the collecting habits of the Roman Art market of the time.

The drawing is in very good condition, having been mounted and glazed in an attractive gilt frame.

It is very likely that the drawing was part of the collection of Pamela de Bulnes, who studied at Toronto University. She was later assistant to Kathleen Fenwick, the first curator of prints and drawings at the National Gallery of Canada. Much of her collection was purchased through Alister Mathews of Bournemouth during the middle of the twentieth century.
