Product Description

Artist: Unknown
Title: Grizzle, Skye Terrier
Medium: Pastel on Blue Paper
Date: 1894

This expressive sketch of ‘Grizzle’, the pricked-ear Skye terrier was drawn in 1891.

Though the artist is unknown, the portrait shows some similarities to the works of Percy Harland Fisher (1867-1944).

Originating on the island of Skye, the hardy "Iseland Dogges", which hunted vermin and game are described as early as 1570 by Dr John Caius and are now believed to be the predecessors of all modern Scottish terriers. Skye Terriers became popular during the early reign of Queen Victoria, but are now one of the rarest breeds in the UK, with as few as fifty of them being born in 2005.
