Product Description

A watercolour and chalk painting of St Michael’s Mount, signed by Charles Edward Brittan and dated 1867.

The view shows St Michael’s Mount at low tide, when it is possible to walk there from the beach at Marazion. The island is seen from nearby, suggesting that the artist might even have made the painting on the tidal straights. A pair of fisherman tend to their boat in the foreground, whilst the wreck of another, long abandoned can be seen in the distance.

It was a composition that Brittan attempted on a few occasions. Two other versions of this painting are known to exist, including a larger painting which can be seen in the collection at Penlee House Gallery in Penzance

Charles Edward Brittan Senior (1837-1888) was a Cornish artist, who specialised in landscape and wildlife paintings. Little is known of his life. He was born in Truro, and would later move to Plymouth. He is often confused with his son of the same name, who painted moorland scenes and landscapes.

The painting is mounted and glazed in a Victorian gilt-composition frame. The condition of the painting is good, though the plasterwork on the frame is worn in parts.
