1868 Watercolour Portraits of Magistrate & Wife by J Villeneuve

A very nice pair of French portrait watercolours of the Magistrate/Judge Charles Tournier and his wife, by the French painter Jules Villeneuve.

The magistrate is wearing his legal hat and robes of office. The paintings consist of head and shoulder portraits in pencil, highlighted in charcoal, sanguine and gouache watercolour. They are signed by the artist underneath and dedicated ‘Souvenir a mon neveu Charles Tournier’ (A souvenir to my nephew Charles Tournier). The portraits are dated 8th of February 1868. The paintings have been remounted, framed and glazed. Condition is good with some light spotting.

Jules VILLENEUVE (1813-1881) is a French artist who appears to have lived and worked in Brittany. Little is known about him, despite being a very competent artist. An artwork by this artist was sold in 1990, at Phillips, London.
