Product Description

A finely painted and elegant watercolour painting of a 18th Century lady in her bedroom or boudoir.

She is represented in clothing that is a fusion of the French pre-Revolution with elements of 1920s 'Flapper' fashion. There is the powdered wig, and bustle dress, but with a long body and low dress, that shows the legs. The lady is wearing a long beaded necklace, typical of the later period.

The painter has a good eye for architectural furnishings and the furniture is in the Louis XVI style. He has signed the painting R J CONOLLY /26. On the lower right corner, outside the picture is a hand painted logo of a blue R H cypher, within a circle. The significance of this is not clear, as the initials do not match those of the artist. One possibility is that it is part of a set of illustrations for a theatre play, hotel and this represents the logo of the company. It could also be an illustration for a book.

The painting is period mahogany wood framed and glazed. On the reverse is a paper label of the 'Picture Framing & Art Department' of Boots Chemist. Condition is good.
