A beautifully elegant nude female study signed by the artist J.M. Balliol Salmon and dated 1927.

The painting is pencil, watercolour and chalk of a young woman in a stylish pose. Just a few brushstrokes has captured her face and body brilliantly. The picture is signed by the artist. On the reverse are some pencil details for the framing of the picture, but also the name Mini Mowbray, c/o …. & Andy, 9 ….. Rd. The framer’s ticket is Victor Waddington Galleries, of Dublin, Ireland. This painting came from the descendants of the woman and on the backing paper is written Mother and later Ma Carter.

Condition is good, with minor foxing. The painting is mounted, glazed and framed.

J.M.Balliol Salmon (1868 – 1953) was a painter in gouaches, watercolours, pastels, as well as a draughtsman and illustrator. He studied at the Westminster School and continued his training at the Academie Julian, in Paris. He lived in Glasgow and Paris. He had a career as a teacher as well as an illustrator. Simon Houfe wrote, in his Dictionary of 19th Century British Book of Illustrators and Caricaturists, that Balliol Salmon was one of the best artists of his time at using pencil, chalk and pastel.
