Product Description

A very well executed Pastel crayon portrait drawing of a wire hair Jack Russell Terrier Dog, called Jim, on brown textured paper (very light sandpaper).

The picture shows a left side view of the dog’s head, which is very fluently drawn, titled “JIM” and signed C. Joane Bastard. The picture has been tastefully mounted, framed and glazed.

Very little is known about the artist Caroline Joane Bastard (1901 – 1987) of Plympton, nr Plymouth, Devon. With a name like that she was most likely related to the local noble Bastard family of Kitley House, near Yealmpton. She was possibly illegitimate, as at the age of 9, the 1911 Census shows her living as a boarder in the house of Mr & Mrs Beer, in Yealmpton. Mr Beer worked as a manservant/domestic. She died in Weston-super-Mare. Worthy of more research.
