Product Description

Though titled “View at Plymouth”, the painting would be more accurately described as a view from Mount Edgecumbe, the country estate on the Cornish-side of Plymouth Sound.

Between two trees the painting depicts a grass area, where people gather in the evening sun and a selection of ships sail in the bay. The sky is red and lightly clouded. The garden battery faces out to sea, whilst the front of ‘Thomson’s Seat’, the Georgian pavilion built to commemorate James Thomson’s poem ‘The Seasons’, stands at the right of the painting. The folly can be seen on top of the distant headland. Towards the horizon is ‘The Mewstone’, the island so frequently painted by JMW Turner’s brush.

Nicholas Condy the Elder (1793-1857) was an English landscape painter, born in the town of Torpoint, which views Plymouth Dockyard from the other side of the estuary. Gazetted to the 43rd regiment as an ensign in 1811 he went on to serve in the Peninsular War. Leaving as a lieutenant in 1818, Condy would return to Plymouth and devote his efforts to painting, chiefly producing small watercolours and gouaches (around 5” x 8”), which he would sell at prices ranging from 15 shillings to 1 guinea. Between 1830 and 1845 he exhibited twice at the Royal Academy, four times at the British Institution and once at the Suffolk Street Gallery. He was the father of the renowned marine painter Nicholas Matthew Condy.
