Product Description

A pair of finely executed Chinese matrimonial studies, made during the Qing Dynasty (1636-1912), in the second half of the 19th century.

One depicts a first-rank official with summer court hat and ruby finial. The peacock feather, in this case with two eyes, was a privilege bestowed upon the wearer by the Emperor. The lady on the left, is wearing a blue matrimonial headdress with white festoons and red and green gems. Both bride and groom bear the dragon head motif on the front of their surcoats.

The condition of both paintings is good, with no wear at all to the paint. The female painting shows areas of foxing as well as an insignificant section of wear beneath the right foot. In the male painting there is small area of stress to the pith paper, on the side of the blue and white waist tassel.
