c1860 Oil On Canvas Landscape by Ludwig Hugo Becker

A fine quality Oil on canvas of a hilly country landscape, with a watermill, a farmer and cart and a castle in the distance.

The painting shows a romantic aspect of bucolic life and is the work of Ludwig Hugo Becker (1833 – 1868). The painting is signed Hugo Becker on the bottom right of the painting and possibly dated, although it is very difficult to read. The painting has been relined, with modern canvas, but it is not apparent when viewed from the front. The painting is mounted in an impressive good quality heavy gilt wood frame. Condition is very good.

Ludwig Hugo Becker, was a painter and etcher, born in Wesel, Germany in 1833 or 34. He studied landscape painting under Schirmer and Gude, at Düsseldorf, in around 1852. He afterwards visited Westphalia, the Upper Rhine, the Moselle, Switzerland, Normandy, and the neighbourhood of the Baltic and specialising in country landscapes. In 1861 he was awarded an art medal at Metz. He died in Düsseldorf in 1868. His short life cut down a very promising career and his paintings rarely come on the market and are very sought after.
