Product Description

An attractive and highly detailed watercolour of a town or city bridge over a river, busy with the bustle of boats and people.

In the background are old stone houses and a church or cathedral spire in the background. The work is by the French born British artist Paul Marney (1829 - 1914). Born in Paris, he worked as a porcelain decorator at Sevres, before moving to Belfast to work with a French architect. In 1860, he moved to Scarborough and concentrated on painting. His main theme was river bridges from Yorkshire and France. Some of the latter were drawn and painted from memory, so it makes determining the location of this piece a little more difficult.

He exhibited at the Royal Academy and examples of his work are in several museums. His work came to the attention of a dealer, who agreed to buy all his production in return for a stipend of £5 a week.

The picture is in very good condition, with good fresh colours. It is signed in the bottom right corner. It is mounted, framed and glazed.
