Product Description

A very fine c1880, large watercolour of Bempton Cliffs, between Bridlington and Scarborough, on the North East coast of England.

It shows a wreck of a ship below the cliffs, with people trying to recover salvage at low tide. It is the work of the accomplished, but obscure painter Joseph Eaman (1853 – 1907), a Marine landscape artist, who seems to have concentrated most of his work in the North East of England. There is at least one painting of Istanbul/Constantinople that shows that he travelled further afield (valued by Bonhams £3000 - £5000, in 2006).

The painting is in good condition, with very little staining or foxing. It is glazed and framed in a period gilded jesso frame, which has lost a little bit of plaster.

Size: 29 x 54 cm (11 ½ x 21 ¼ inches)
Size frame: 52 x 76.5 x 2.5 cm (20 ½ x 30 x 1 inches)
