Product Description

A fine condition and quality oil on board painting of fishing boats at low tide by the famous Victorian artist, William Henry Pike.

The painting depicts the creek at Oreston, in Plymouth, with a man cleaning the hull at the stern of a vessel called HERO. In the background are the houses along the waterside. The painting has been mounted and framed. On the reverse of the painting is written in pencil ‘Oreston, nr Plymouth PIKE’.

William Henry Pike (1846-1908) was a landscape painter, specialising in seaside scenes. His active years, from 1880 – 1907 saw him exhibit 39 times at the Royal British Academy, 37 times at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, twice at the Royal Academy, 3 times at the Royal Hibernian Academy and 15 times at the Royal Institute. Pike was invited to join the Royal British Academy in 1889 and the Royal Institute in 1890.
