Product Description

A very good looking, powerful watercolour and gouache painting of a commercial port harbour scene by Frederick William Hattersley.

The painting depicts the busy harbour, with steamships dotted around, on a slightly misty daybreak. The picture dates from around 1900 - 1910, with a preponderance of steamships, although there are sailing ships in the distance. The painting has a monotone spectrum in general, contrasting with the yellow of the ship’s chimney and the red of the merchant navy flag. The painting has been signed on the bottom left, but it is difficult to read, being F.W. Hattersley. The painting has been tastefully remounted, framed and glazed. Condition is very good.

F.W. Hattersley (b.1860) was a painter of watercolour landscapes and beach scenes. He was born in Sheffield. He had diverse talents, being recorded as a carver and gilder as well as an artist. He is a talented and much collected artist, that has escaped attention from writers, as he didn’t exhibit in London. He had no formal art training, although he did exhibit with the Sheffield Society of Artists (c1880-1890). His work has a distinctive style.
