Product Description

A very attractive late 19th century, early 20th marine watercolour of the Dutch Coast.

The painting shows an estuary with beached Dutch luggers and houses on the edge. A large windmill dominates the background. The painting is signed OSWALD GARSIDE and has been framed and glazed.

Oswald Garside (1869 – 1942) was born in Southport, Lancashire. He became a cabinet maker, living with his widowed mother and two of his brothers. Educated at Ross's School, Southport, People's College, Warrington and at Lancashire Art College and in 1893 obtained his passport and studied at the Académie Julian in Paris for three years. In 1901, he was living in Barnes, Surrey. Garside then went to Italy where he painted the local scenery and was renowned for his innovative use of mixed media, generally a combination of watercolour, gouache, oil paint and gum Arabic. He was elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1916, and exhibited 37 times at the Royal Academy, over 100 times at the Royal Cambrian Academy and in 1923 exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club, a watercolour 'Winter'. He died in Richmond, Surrey aged 73. He is the author of 'Landscape Painting in Watercolour’ (1929).
