Product Description

A charming c1910 oil on board painting of a traditional Bavarian tavern scene, with the landlord smoking a German porcelain pipe and holding a pewter lidded stoneware stein.

It is signed August Zimmermann. The seated customer is wearing the typical dress with the shiny brass buttons. He is busy cutting a slice of black pudding. The faces are very well executed with a lot of character. The paintwork is lightly crackled with age, but this is stable and would probably improve if kept in a warm, dry atmosphere. It certainly doesn't detract from the beauty of the painting.

The painting is mounted in a lovely ornate gilt wood frame, also in fine condition. On the reverse, the board has a printed label: August Zimmermann - Kunstmaler - Berlin SO36 - Muskauer Str. 1 - Tel. 68 66 11.

Our research shows that August Albert Zimmermann (1808 - 1888) was a German painter, the brother of painters Max, Richard, and Robert Zimmermann and he served as Max's teacher. Although the timelines do not match, they may have been related.
