Product Description

An oil painting by Georges François entitled the ‘Bords du Niger’, which was likely painted during his tour of French West Africa during the late 1920’s.

Georges ‘Geo’ François was born at St. Gourgon near Vendome on the 25th June 1880. Little is known of his early life, apart from his education at the School of Fine Arts in Tours and later at the National School of Paris under the academic painter Jean-Paul Laurens. In the early 1920’s Francois was tasked with illustrating posters promoting the town of Evian. The rest of the decade he’d spend touring the French colonies in Africa. After exhibiting at the New York World Fair of 1939, Francois’ intentions to return to France were scuppered with the outbreak of War. Instead he embarked for the French Antilles, where he remained for the next decade. Francois died in Paris in October of 1968.

The painting depicts a village on the banks of the River Niger. Women in brightly coloured robes balance earthenware pots on their heads. A couple tend to a fire in the foreground.

The painting is in good condition and has been tastefully framed.
