Product Description

A pair of fine oil on canvas paintings of fishing vessels leaving the Port of Lowestoft and vessels in the harbour, by the artist Vernon Edmunds.

The first painting shows numerous fishing smacks in a moderate swell, with a section of the pier. The second shows the boats within the harbour, some of them beached. The paintings date from around 1920- 1921 and are in good condition (The second has been restored and relined). They have both been signed V. EDMUNDS. Written on the first canvas, on the reverse is: ‘R.M.D.S.F. Boats off to Sea – Lowestoft’. The paintings has been mounted in an attractive gilded wooden frames.

Little is known about Vernon Edmunds. He lived in Molesley Rd, Birmingham and together with other amateur and professional painters established community of artists in Sheffield’s Rivelin Valley in the years immediately after the First World War. The paintings and watercolours they produced provide a unique portrait of the valley at the time and reflect both its natural beauty and longstanding industrial heritage. The other artists included Ben Baines, W R E Goodrich, Robert Scott-Temple and Vernon Edmonds. 2 of his paintings were presented to the Royal Society of Art in Birmingham. These paintings represent a departure from his normal subjects. The initials RMDSF may refer to the Rivelin Society.
