An intelligent watercolour study of two foxhounds waiting by a small pond. The lighter of the pair is female, whilst the other is male.

Cecil Aldin (1870 – 1935) was a London-born artist and illustrator, best known for his paintings and sketches of English rural life. Portrayed with an air of comedy, Aldin’s Fallowfield Hunt series saw him achieve popularity during the early Edwardian era. Joining The Chelsea Arts Club in 1908, Aldin went on to hold his first exhibition in Paris later that year. Aldin’s passion for the hunt saw him become master of the South Berkshire Hunt in 1910.

The condition of the painting is good considering its age, with only slight foxing.

Monograms of Victorian and Edwardian Artists by Peter Nahum, records an interesting variation in the monograms used by Aldin during his career. Though we cannot be certain, we believe the stylised “CA”, is an atypical version of his more customary monogram.
