Product Description

An adeptly painted watercolour of a river cottage scene, by the Suffolk-based painter Charlotte H. Spiers.

Charlotte Horn Spiers was born in Oxford on the 5th of December 1844. Her early career was spent in the Minton Workshop, where working as a freelance artist she won frequent acclaim for her depictions of fruit and flowers. In 1878 she won first prize 'for her boldly-painted group of irises' as recorded in the 'Magazine of Art'. This detailed eye would become a feature of her later work, especially distinct in watercolours where areas of meticulous detail were dispersed amongst a loosely painted whole.

She exhibited extensively in the years between 1880 and 1914: 7 times at the Royal British Academy; 5 times at the Royal Academy; once in the Royal Hibernian Academy; 20 times in the Royal institute and 112 times at the Society of Woman Artists.

The painting depicts a thatched cottage on the bank of a small tree-lined river. In the foreground a lady cradles a baby whilst a small boat sits at the riverbank. In the distance a densely wooded area obscures the horizon. In the bottom left corner is the signature for ‘C.H. Spiers.’

The condition is good, though there is a noticeable area of foxing in the sky. The painting has been mounted, framed and glazed.
