Product Description

Artist: Circle of Edward Lear (1812-1888)
Title: Amalfi, Gulf of Salerno
Medium: Ink, graphite and watercolour on laid paper
Inscription: “Amalfi, 30 Oct. 1838”

This unfinished view of Amalfi was painted on 30th October 1838, from the Piazzale dei Protontini, the sea wall which shields the town from the south west.

The painting shows marked similarities to the work of Edward Lear, with the date coinciding with his first tour of Italy. Lear produced a view of the town of Atrani (less than a kilometre away) in July of the same year (Sotheby’s 30 June 2005), perhaps suggesting that it was made by a travelling partner or a watercolourist in his close circle.

Amalfi had long been a popular tourist destination for artists, with the Luna Convento monastery having been converted to a hotel in the first quarter of the 19th century.
