Product Description

An attractive oil on board entitled ‘The Camp on Holmbury Hill’ by the artist Frank Walton.

Frank Walton (1840-1928) was a painter of oils specialising in landscapes and coastal scenes. In his long and decorated career, Walton exhibited 101 times at the Royal Academy; once at the Royal Society of British Artists; 137 times at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters; 230 times at the Royal Institute and 34 times at the National Gallery. He became an honorary member of the Royal Miniature Society in 1912 and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1883.

Holmbury hill, near the village of Holmbury St Mary in Surrey, is the site of an Iron Age Fort excavated during the late 1920’s. In 1929 an archaeological dig was able to date it to the 1st Century A.D.

Frank Walton died in 1928, so we believe the oil was painted during his later years.

The painting depicts a wooded valley in autumn, amidst grey, overcast sky. In the bottom right corner is the signature of Frank Walton. Framed modestly in a period frame.
