Grand Tour Venetian Watercolour Drawing St Mark’s Square

Artist: Venetian School
Title: Column of St Mark’s Square, Venice
Medium: Ink and Wash (with Bodycolour) on Wove Paper
Date: 19th Century

This expressive ink sketch shows figures congregating before the iconic San Todaro Column in St Mark’s Square. The church of San Giorgio Maggiore can be seen in the distance, as can the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute

The style of figures is reminiscent of the works of Francesco Guardi (1712-1793) and might suggest that the drawing was produced in one of the many large workshops, catering to the tastes of 19th century grand tourists.
