Product Description

A small three-quarter length oval portrait of Samuel Oliver Hunt of Stratford upon Avon, attributed to John Downman (1750-1824).

The painting was sold at auction, with another John Downman portrait of William Hunt (1766-1852), the brother of the sitter. It was part of a Cornish Private Collection, from Enys House, a stately home near to Falmouth.

Samuel Oliver Hunt (1771-1801) was born in Stratford upon Avon, the son of the solicitor and town clerk William Hunt (1731-1783) and his wife Catherine Oakes (1743-1813). He married Lucy Anne Enys in 1794. Samuel Hunt died in 1801 at the age of 29, leaving his widowed wife with three young children. Lucy Anne would return to Cornwall and revert to her maiden name of Enys.

The painting is an oil on copper panel and dates from the last decade of the 18th century. It shows a young man, in his early twenties, wearing a red jacket and white collar. The reverse of the painting bears lengthy annotations relating to its history: “Robert ?? (sic) Hunt of Stratford on Avon about 1791 Bought by John Enys from Mrs Hunt of Folkestone 1906.”

On page 64 of John Downman ARA: His Life and Works, in the section entitled “Portraits exhibited by John Downman ARA at the Royal Academy” number 461 records the exhibition of ‘ten small portraits of persons of distinction” in 1791.

The painting is in good condition, having been mounted and glazed in its original gilt metal and wood composition frame.
