Product Description

These charming watercolour studies, depicting different species of primates, were painted by Miss Amy Twinning of Torquay, between the years of 1939 and 1971.

Two of them depict a pair of African Colobus Monkeys, whilst the others show a selection of marmosets and spider monkeys. Another portrays a small Gibbon, one of the lesser apes.

Little can be found Amy Twinning, though it seems she was a talented and careful painter, with a fascination for the natural world. Her works, generally of birds, flowers, and small animals are all painted on paper, beginning with a pencil outline and coloured with opaque watercolours and chalk.

It is also typical for the reverse of each of them to bear short descriptions. From these we can gather that she was a frequent visitor to Paignton Zoo (just a few miles away), where she observed many of her subjects. Her other paintings seem to have been painted from the various natural history magazines that she subscribed to.

Though these paintings have been framed, two of the dedications read: “Freddy the Gibian (Gibbon) at Paignton Zoo He is very tame takes things from the hand. 1971” and “Bushy Monkey 1939.”
