Product Description

A very nice watercolour by one of the founders of the Newlyn School art movement, Frank Richards (1863 - 1935).

It shows a pond or ditch in a field, with a arched stone bridge in the background. The painting is impressionistic and probably dates around the beginning of the 1900s. It has been framed and glazed. It is signed in the bottom right hand corner.

Frank Richards was born in Birmingham in 1863 and lived there till about 1887. He worked as an illustrator, but travelled abroad in Europe and North Africa, developing a style that was looser and became an impressionist. He moved to Cornwall, where he mixed with like minded artists in Newlyn and became a founder of the Newlyn School. As such, he rubbed shoulders with Stanhope Forbes, Harold Harvey, Henry Scott Tuke and Walter Langley, amongst others. He exhibited in several towns and was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1921. He exhibited 3 works at the Royal Academy and died in 1935.
