Product Description

The present portrait bears marked similarities to miniatures coming out of Hamburg in the second half of the 18th century, when a host of talented artists were working there.

Stylistically it resembles the work of Peter Adolf Hall (1739-1793), a Franco-Swedish artist who worked in Hamburg at the start of his career. He is believed to have learnt from the miniaturist Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Richard (c1725-1770). Johann Dominik Bossi (1767-1853), was born in Trieste, then a part of the Austrian Empire and came slightly later. His best known student was Jan Gottlib Jannasch, (d. 1804), a promising artist, who seems to have died prematurely.

The condition of the miniature is generally very good, though it has faded slightly over time. It is housed in a beautiful “fausse montre” (faux-watch) style frame, with brown hair (presumably the sitters) to the reverse. Though the marks are indecipherable, the gold tests as 15 carat.
